How to plan for Vienna Christmas markets

Vienna runs several markets, with the Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz as the largest. Its 2026 edition ran 13 November–26 December, and the separate ice rink continued into January — a different closing date from the market itself.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 2027 dates not yet published · 2026 ran 13 November–26 December

Venue or host area: Several markets, with the Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz as the largest and the Advent markets at Schönbrunn, Belvedere and the Spittelberg as smaller alternatives.

Access: Entry to the markets is free and unticketed. Food, drink, the ice rink and the craft workshops are paid individually. The 2026 venue reported accessible toilets and wheelchair-usable tables and cash machines; those are prior-edition arrangements and not a 2027 guarantee.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The Rathausplatz is served by tram 1, 71 and D, tram 2, and U2 and U3, all within a few minutes' walk. The 2026 market runs 13 November–26 December, and the separate Ice Dream rink continues into January — a different closing date. Vienna in December is cold and often wet, and the market's paths are paved but crowded.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A set of Advent markets across Vienna, with the Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz as the largest, plus markets at Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, the Spittelberg quarter and in the city's neighbourhoods. The Rathausplatz market fills the square in front of the neo-Gothic city hall, with a large tree, an ice rink and a programme of choirs.

Why it matters

Vienna's markets are as much about the setting as the shopping: the Rathausplatz market is framed by the city hall, the Schönbrunn market sits inside the palace grounds, and the Spittelberg market fills narrow streets with crafts rather than mass-produced goods. The city's coffee-house and concert culture runs alongside, which is why December in Vienna is a season rather than a market.

History

Vienna has held Advent markets since the 18th century, when the first were staged near the cathedral, and the modern Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz dates from the 1970s. The city now coordinates more than twenty markets, each with its own character and its own opening dates, and the 2027 dates had not been published at review.
