How to plan for Dresden Striezelmarkt

Dresden's Striezelmarkt, on the Altmarkt, is one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets and free to enter. Its 2026 edition ran 25 November–24 December; the city has not yet published 2027.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 2027 dates not yet published · 2026 ran 25 November–24 December

Venue or host area: The Altmarkt in Dresden's old town, with the Striezelmarkt's wooden stalls centred on the square and the Striezel — the long fruit loaf — sold from the stalls around the central stage.

Access: Entry is free and unticketed. Purchases, the ferris wheel and the craft demonstrations are paid individually. No 2027 dates, hours or event programme were published at review.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The Altmarkt is a short walk from Postplatz and Altmarkt tram stops, and the market sits within the pedestrian old town alongside the Frauenkirche and the Kreuzkirche. Dresden's 2026 edition ran 25 November–24 December with free entry, and the city has not published 2027 dates. December evenings are cold, and the square is exposed.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

The Striezelmarkt on Dresden's Altmarkt, one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, with wooden stalls, a large Christmas pyramid, a giant candle arch and the city's Stollen bread as its signature food. The market fills the square through Advent, and the Stollen festival in early December parades a giant loaf through the streets.

Why it matters

Dresden's market is where the Christmas Stollen is celebrated, and its name comes from Striezel, the old word for the bread — the market began as a place to sell it. The pyramid and the candle arch are Saxon craft traditions rather than commercial decorations, and the market's scale is deliberately domestic: it is a city market, not a theme park.

History

The Striezelmarkt was first held in 1434, making it one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, and it has run almost every year since. The Stollen festival was added in the 1990s, reviving a tradition that dates back centuries, and the market now runs from late November to Christmas Eve, with the 2027 dates not yet published.
