Venue or host area: Szent István Square in front of the basilica for the Advent Basilica market, with the Vörösmarty Square market a short walk away along the pedestrian street.

Access: Entry is free and unticketed. Food, drink, the ice rink and craft purchases are paid individually. No 2027 dates, prices or accessibility details were published.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The basilica square is on metro line M1 at Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út and a short walk from Arany János utca on M3. The published 2026/27 window is 13 November–1 January. Budapest in December is cold, and the market is an evening event — the light show projected onto the basilica façade draws a crowd on the hour.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

Advent markets in Budapest, with the largest in front of St Stephen's Basilica and a second major market on Vörösmarty Square, running from mid-November into the new year. The Basilica market is built around a light show projected onto the church facade each evening, and both markets concentrate on food and craft stalls rather than imported goods.

Why it matters

Budapest's Basilica market is one of the most photographed in Europe because of the projection show, which runs every evening through Advent and turns the church into the backdrop for the stalls. The city's market culture is unusually food-led — goulash, kürtőskalács, sausages and foie gras are sold alongside crafts — and thetwo markets have distinct characters rather than being copies of each other.

History

Budapest's Advent fair at St Stephen's Basilica began in the 2000s and grew quickly into the city's main Christmas event, alongside the older Vörösmarty Square market. Both run into January, and the Basilica's facade projection has been part of the programme since the early 2010s, drawing crowds for the hourly shows.
