How to plan for Valkenburg cave Christmas market

Valkenburg's market is underground, held in the Gemeentegrot beneath the Cauberg, and it is the one market here that sells timed tickets. The 2026 edition ran 13 November–30 December; 2027 dates and prices are not yet announced.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 2027 dates not announced · 2026 ran 13 November–30 December

Venue or host area: The Gemeentegrot beneath the Cauberg in Valkenburg, a former limestone quarry whose passages are fitted out with stalls and displays; the separate Fluweelengrot and Wilhelminagrot markets run nearby.

Access: This is a ticketed market, with date-and-time slots sold online. In 2026 adult prices were €9 Monday–Thursday and €11 Friday–Sunday, children 5–11 €6.50 and under-fives free, before service fees. The official FAQ states the cave market is wheelchair accessible. No 2027 price, date or inventory was published.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Valkenburg is a short train ride from Maastricht and Heerlen, with the caves a walk or bus ride from the station. The 2026 cave market ran 13 November–30 December with date-and-time entry, and the town's 2026 season included a cheap return bus ticket — transport, not cave admission. The caves are a constant temperature but the entrance queues are outdoors.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A Christmas market held underground in the Gemeentegrot, a cave beneath the Cauberg in Valkenburg, with a second market in the Wilhelminagrot and a smaller one in the Fluweelengrot. The caves are decorated with lights and stalls for the season, and the temperature stays constant regardless of the weather outside.

Why it matters

Valkenburg's market is the one Christmas market in Europe held in caves: the marl stone galleries are narrow, low and lit by the stalls themselves, which gives the market an atmosphere no town square can reproduce. It is the reason a small Limburg town fills with coach parties each December, and the caves are as much the attraction as the shopping.

History

The caves are former marl quarries, mined for building stone over centuries; the galleries were also used as shelters during the war. The Christmas market in the Gemeentegrot began in the 1980s and expanded to the other caves as it outgrew the first, and the town now runs a Christmas programme alongside it with a parade and events on the Cauberg.
