02 · Plan the visit
The square is a five-minute walk from Viru and Raekoja plats tram stops, inside the pedestrian old town. The 2026/27 edition ran 20 November–6 January with daily hours to 8pm. Tallinn in December is dark by mid-afternoon and often snowy, and the cobbles around the square are slippery.
03 · Location

04 · Overview
A Christmas market on Tallinn's Town Hall Square, built around a large Christmas tree, with wooden stalls selling Estonian crafts, black bread, sausages, honey and mulled wine. The square is medieval — the town hall dates from the 14th century — and the market is small enough to walk in twenty minutes.

Tallinn's market lays claim to the first public Christmas tree: a tree was set up on the square by the Brotherhood of Blackheads in 1441, and the city has decorated one there ever since. That history, plus the intact medieval square, is what makes a relatively small market worth the trip — it is the setting rather than the scale that carries it.
The tradition of a tree on the Town Hall Square dates from 1441, when the Brotherhood of Blackheads installed one and danced around it, and the practice continued through the centuries. The modern market was established in the 2000s as a month-long event, running from late November into early January, with the 2027 dates not yet published.
