How to plan for Prague Christmas markets

Prague's main markets fill Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square and run through into January. The operator's current dates are 28 November 2026–6 January 2027; nothing for 2027 has been issued.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 2027 dates not yet published · 2026/27 ran 28 November–6 January

Venue or host area: Old Town Square around the Jan Hus memorial and Wenceslas Square along the long boulevard, both run by the same operator, with smaller markets at Republic Square and Havelské tržiště.

Access: Entry to the markets is free and unticketed. Food, drink and purchases are paid individually. The operator's practical-information page is a general reference rather than 2027 accessibility guidance.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Both main squares are on metro line A and B respectively and within a fifteen-minute walk of each other, so most visitors do them in one evening. The current operator dates are 28 November 2026–6 January 2027, and nothing for 2027 has been issued. Prague in December is cold and the squares are exposed, with the Old Town Square particularly crowded at the hourly clock show.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

Christmas markets in Prague's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, running from late November into early January, with wooden stalls, mulled wine, trdelník and a large Christmas tree. The Old Town Square market sits beneath the astronomical clock and the Týn Church, and the two squares are a ten-minute walk apart.

Why it matters

Prague's market is one of the few in Europe that runs past Christmas into the new year, which makes it a fixture of the city's winter tourist season rather than a four-week event. The Old Town Square setting — the clock, the church spires, the stalls and the tree — is the image most visitors come for, and the market's food is more Czech than generic.

History

Prague's Christmas markets were revived after 1989, when the city reopened its squares to public events, and grew into one of the largest in central Europe. The Old Town Square market has run annually since, closing on 6 January after Three Kings' Day, and the city now also runs a smaller market at Prague Castle and in the individual districts.
