How to plan for Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt

Nuremberg is the one market on this list with 2027 dates already published: 26 November–24 December on the Hauptmarkt. Entry is free, and the market opens daily with a shorter final afternoon on 24 December.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 26 November–24 December 2027 · Hauptmarkt

Venue or host area: The Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg's old town, with the Christkind's opening prologue from the church gallery and the market's stalls filling the square; the neighbouring squares carry the children's market and the sister-cities market.

Access: Entry to the market is free and needs no ticket. Food, drink and purchases are paid individually, and the children's market and other squares are open to anyone in the street. No 2027 ticketing detail exists because none is required.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The market is in the pedestrian centre, a short walk from Lorenzkirche U-Bahn station, with buses 36, 37, 46 and 47 also serving the area — but that transport page is old and is not a 2027 service guarantee. The 2027 dates are already published, 26 November–24 December, and the market opens daily with a short final afternoon on the 24th. Hotels in the old town sell out for the opening weekend and the Advent Saturdays.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

The Christkindlesmarkt on Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt, running through Advent to Christmas Eve, with wooden stalls selling gingerbread, bratwurst, roasted almonds and decorations under the Christmas lights. The market fills the square in front of the Frauenkirche and spills into the adjoining streets, and the opening ceremony has the Christkind speak from the church gallery.

Why it matters

Nuremberg is the most famous Christmas market in Germany and the model most others copy: the Rauschgoldengel angel, the Lebkuchen and the Christkind opening are all Nuremberg inventions, and the market's rules on what may be sold keep it to traditional goods rather than imported trinkets. It is also one of the oldest, documented since the 17th century.

History

The market is first documented in 1628, and its Christkind opening ceremony dates from the 1930s, when the figure replaced an earlier tradition. The market has run annually since, with cancellations during wartime and in 2020, and 2027 is already published for 26 November–24 December — the only market on this list with confirmed dates.
