The target rollover is 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027. Times Square’s 2027 directory lists paid venue parties, while its public-event FAQ and access pages still contain older-edition material; the 2026/27 outdoor viewing footprint, admission policy and entry plan were not confirmed in the pages reviewed.

Venue or host area: One Times Square is the Ball Drop’s focal point. Public viewing has historically used the Times Square Bowtie, but the specific 2026/27 viewing pens, entrances and capacity rules were not confirmed; the map marker is approximate city orientation only.
Access: The current NYE 2027 directory lists paid, venue-specific parties. The latest detailed FAQ text reviewed describes a prior edition’s free, unticketed, first-come public viewing, but the page also carries stale year references; treat that as historical context, not a guarantee of 2026/27 access. No public-viewing reservation or ticket offer was found.
02 · Plan the visit
Plan around the official access route
A party ticket is for its named venue, not a public viewing-pen pass or a guarantee of entry through police checkpoints. Do not assume public viewing will be free or that prior-year first-come guidance guarantees admission: historic viewing areas can fill and access is controlled. No 2026/27 gate schedule, street-closure map or event-specific MTA service bulletin was found; recheck Times Square Alliance, NYC 311 and MTA closer to the date. The organizer’s webcast page describes a free livestream with open captions and ASL as an at-home option, not an in-person access plan.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview
What this event is
The New Year's Eve countdown in Times Square, where a lit ball descends a pole above One Times Square in the final minute of the year. The public event is free and standing-only: spectators are held in pens along Broadway and Seventh Avenue from the afternoon, there are no toilets or food inside the viewing areas, and everything carried in must fit in a clear bag.

Why it matters
The ball drop is the image most of the world associates with New Year in New York, and the broadcast reaches a global audience in the hundreds of millions. It is also one of the few major New Year events that is entirely free — the trade-off is standing in a pen for hours in winter weather, which is why the surrounding venues sell their own ticketed parties and most New Yorkers watch from home.
History
The first ball drop was staged in 1907, replacing the fireworks display the city had banned, and has run every year since except 1942 and 1943, when wartime lighting restrictions kept the square dark. The ball has been redesigned several times — the current version is a LED-covered sphere installed for the event's centenary in 2007 — and the confetti release at midnight is now as much a part of the ritual as the descent.
