How to plan for Harbin Ice and Snow Festival 2026–27

Harbin’s reported 2026–27 city ice-and-snow season runs from early November 2026 to March 2027, with the 43rd festival opening ceremony named for 5 January. That ceremony date is not the visitor opening date of the 28th Harbin Ice-Snow World park; attraction calendars and ticket terms remain incomplete.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 2026–27 city season · early November 2026–March 2027; individual attraction dates vary

Venue or host area: A citywide season with distinct sites: Harbin Ice-Snow World in Songbei, the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Art Expo, the Songhua River Ice-Snow Carnival and Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Art Garden. The city report gives Zhaolin Park a planned 30 December 2026 opening; it does not publish a complete visitor calendar for the other attractions.

Access: No public official ticket-on-sale notice, price or inventory status for the 28th Ice-Snow World edition was found. The operator’s public site still presents 27th-edition information. The city report names several separate attractions, so do not assume a single admission pass, shared opening date or universal access policy.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Do not plan the trip around the 5 January ceremony as if every attraction opens that day. The operator’s public page still describes the 27th Ice-Snow World edition; its old prices and operating times are not 2026/27 terms. A Heilongjiang Culture and Tourism guide dated 20 August 2026, for a separate summer event at the park, says Metro Line 2 serves the Ice and Snow World station. That is not a 2026/27 winter service plan; recheck the operator’s current route map, service times and venue-specific access before travel. No complete 28th-edition barrier-free route information was found. Follow current weather and venue safety notices for icy surfaces and falling-ice hazards.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A winter season in Harbin, north-east China, built around Harbin Ice and Snow World — a temporary city of illuminated ice buildings, slides and temples rebuilt each winter from blocks cut out of the frozen Songhua River — alongside the snow-sculpture park on Sun Island and the lantern fair in Zhaolin Park. Temperatures sit between -15°C and -30°C through the season, which is what keeps the structures standing.

Why it matters

Harbin is the largest ice-and-snow festival in the world, and the ice city is the reason: buildings several storeys high are assembled from river ice, lit from within at night, and demolished when the thaw comes. The festival is also the centrepiece of Harbin's winter tourism economy, and the city's Russian-influenced architecture gives the season a character distinct from any other winter event.

History

The festival was first held in 1963 and was suspended during the Cultural Revolution before resuming in 1985, when it became an annual official event. Ice and Snow World opened as a separate ticketed attraction in 1999 and is now the centrepiece, with the ice blocks harvested each December and the site built to a different theme every year.

What we could not verify

  • The 28th Ice-Snow World visitor opening and closing dates, ticket sales, prices and current inventory were not published in the official pages reviewed.
  • The Sun Island expo and Songhua River carnival visitor calendars and ticket terms were not given; the city report lists a planned 30 December opening for Zhaolin Park only.
  • A current 2026/27 winter-service route map and event-period metro timetable were not found in the official material reviewed; the August 2026 directions cover a separate summer event. Venue-specific accessibility routes and winter safety notices also remain to be checked.
