The target night is 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027, but the official municipal Réveillon portal reviewed still shows the previous edition. Copacabana is a customary and historically documented anchor, not a confirmed 2026/27 citywide venue; one separately ticketed venue event does not establish the city’s beach programme.

Timing: Typical New Year’s Eve window · 31 December 2026–1 January 2027 citywide programme not announced
Venue or host area: The citywide 2026/27 host areas and fireworks plan were not announced in the official municipal material reviewed. The prior edition used Copacabana and Leme among several sites; treat those locations as historical precedent only. Riotur separately lists a ticketed show at Brava Arena Jockey on 31 December.
Access: The previous city-operated edition advertised free public shows, but that does not confirm the next edition’s admission terms. A separately listed ticketed show at Brava Arena Jockey is not the citywide beach celebration; at review, its linked Ingresse selector displayed three named ticket groups for that venue event. This does not establish citywide access or remaining inventory.
02 · Plan the visit
Plan around the official access route
Wait for the city’s new programme and operational plan before choosing a beach, station or viewing point. The prior edition’s metro pass, road closures, access rules and stage locations do not establish the next edition’s arrangements. Riotur lists a separate ticketed event at Brava Arena Jockey; its linked Ingresse selector shows three named groups for that event only—not the city’s beach programme or remaining ticket inventory. Recheck the provider page for current venue-specific terms.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview
What this event is
Rio's Réveillon: a citywide New Year's Eve programme whose centrepiece is the fireworks and concert on Copacabana beach, with smaller events along the coast at Ipanema, Barra and Flamengo and parties in the city's neighbourhoods. Fireworks are launched from barges offshore so the whole bay is lit, and the beach fills from late evening until after dawn.
Rio's celebration is the largest New Year's Eve gathering in South America, and it has a ritual character the northern hemisphere's events do not: white clothing for peace, offerings to Iemanjá carried to the water's edge, and a mix of Catholic and Afro-Brazilian practice that visitors are welcome to observe but not to stage. The public beach event is free; the private parties in hotels and clubs are separate products.
History
The beachfront Réveillon grew out of neighbourhood and Afro-Brazilian religious observances into a mass public event in the second half of the 20th century, as Copacabana became the city's front room. The municipality now publishes an official programme each year through Riotur, and individual venues sell their own tickets separately from the public event on the sand.
