02 · Plan the visit
Plan around the official access route
Salzburg is compact enough to walk between the festival venues, and the station is a short bus or tram ride from the centre; Munich and Vienna are both reachable by train. The festival period coincides with peak summer tourism, so accommodation should be booked well ahead. Opera and concert tickets are released in stages, and returns appear through the festival's own channel rather than resale sites.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview
What this event is
A summer festival of opera, theatre and concerts in Salzburg, running about six weeks from mid-July, with a separate Whitsun festival in May. Performances take place in the Grosses Festspielhaus, the Haus für Mozart, the Felsenreitschule — a theatre cut into the rock face — and the Cathedral Square, where Jedermann opens the festival.
Salzburg is the most prestigious classical festival in the world, founded by the people who invented modern stage direction and programmed in the city of Mozart's birth. Its ticket allocation is famously difficult, the Jedermann on the Cathedral Square is the festival's opening ritual, and the combination of star conductors, new productions and a compact historic centre makes it the season's most concentrated gathering of the classical music world.
History
Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Reinhardt and Richard Strauss founded the festival in 1920, opening with Hofmannsthal's Jedermann. It was absorbed into Nazi cultural policy and suspended at the end of the war before reopening in 1945, and Herbert von Karajan's era from the 1950s established its modern international standing. The Whitsun festival was added in 1973.
