How to plan for Coachella

Coachella runs two weekends in 2027, 9–11 and 16–18 April, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Passes are sold per weekend, and the official site already lists its 2027 advance sale, Amex passes, hotel packages and AXS resale.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 9–11 and 16–18 April 2027 · Empire Polo Club, Indio

Venue or host area: Empire Polo Club, Indio, in the Coachella Valley of southern California. The site is a large open field with multiple stages and a camping area; the map marker shows the valley, not a gate or a camping entrance.

Access: Passes are sold per weekend rather than as a single three-day festival ticket, with advance sale, Amex-specific passes, hotel packages and an official waitlist/resale channel. Camping and parking are separate. No 2027 price or remaining inventory was verified.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The festival is roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive from Los Angeles and there is no meaningful public transport to the gates, so most visitors arrive by car, shuttle or a booked stay. On-site camping and off-site hotel packages are separate products, and the official site routes resale through AXS. Desert heat, dust and long walks between stages are the practical planning facts; arrange your return journey before the weekend rather than after the headline set.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A three-day music festival in the Colorado Desert at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, run across two consecutive weekends in April with the same bill on each. The site has multiple stages — the main Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Sahara and Sonora among them — plus a large art-installation programme, on-site camping and a shuttle network from the surrounding towns. Daytime temperatures are usually in the thirties Celsius, which shapes how the weekend is planned.

Why it matters

Coachella set the template for the modern destination festival: a desert site, a photographable art programme, and a line-up that books stadium acts alongside emerging artists. The two-weekend format, introduced because the first edition sold out in days, is now standard for large US festivals, and the event's fashion and brand-activation culture has made it as much a media event as a concert.

History

The first Coachella was a one-day event in October 1999 and lost money; it returned as a two-day festival in 2001 and expanded to three days in 2002. A second weekend was added in 2012, the festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, and Goldenvoice has promoted every edition. The site is a working polo field for the rest of the year.
