Plan around the official access route
Use IMS's current event schedule, race-day ticket page and gate regulations for the latest session, parking and entry details. Parking and camping products are offered separately; use the event-year plan instead of carrying forward a previous year's gate or lot instructions.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview
What this event is
A 500-mile race on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, run over 200 laps on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Thirty-three cars start, turning left 800 times at average speeds above 220 mph, with four distinct corners and a brick start-finish line that gives the track its nickname.
The 500 is the largest single-day sporting crowd in the United States and the oldest race of its kind still running at its original venue. The four-corner oval is the defining test of American open-wheel racing, and the month of May around it — practice, qualifying over two weekends, the pit-stop contest and the parade — is a civic ritual in Indiana rather than just a race. The winner drinks milk in victory lane, a tradition that dates from the 1930s.
History
The first Indianapolis 500 ran in 1911 on a track built in 1909 as a test facility for the American car industry. The race has been held every year since except 1917–18 and 1942–45, and it survived the split between CART and the Indy Racing League in the 1990s that divided American open-wheel racing for more than a decade. The speedway was paved with bricks in 1909 and resurfaced in 1961, with a strip of the original bricks kept at the start-finish line.
