How to plan for The Open Championship

The 155th Open is at the Old Course, St Andrews. The R&A’s published event week is 11–18 July 2027; championship rounds are Thursday 15–Sunday 18 July.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 11–18 July 2027 event week · championship rounds 15–18 July

Venue or host area: The Old Course, St Andrews, Scotland. The R&A distinguishes the full public event week from the four championship rounds; use the event-week dates for practice-day planning and the competition dates for the championship itself.

Access: The R&A ballot closed 24 July 2026. The page’s stated outcome-notification deadline—end September—had passed, but no later public confirmation that every applicant was notified or that surplus general-admission tickets are available was found. Official ticket/accommodation packages and Ticket Plus for practice days are separate published purchase routes.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The general-admission ballot closed on 24 July 2026. Its public page still said outcomes were due by the end of September, a deadline that had passed by this review; I found no newer public confirmation of all applicant outcomes or a surplus-ticket sale. The R&A lists official packages and Ticket Plus for practice days. It says there is no public parking at the course and directs visitors to Park & Ride or the Leuchars rail shuttle; accessibility parking requires advance registration, with a 2 July 2027 deadline.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

Getting to St Andrews

A small coastal town in Fife built around a university and three links courses, with the Old Course running along the edge of the town beach.

Connections, terminals and transfer arrangements change — confirm them with the airline and the organiser rather than planning around a fixed transfer time.

04 · Overview

What this event is

The oldest championship in golf, played over four rounds on a links course in the United Kingdom on a rota that includes St Andrews, Royal St George's, Royal Liverpool, Royal Troon and Carnoustie. The 2027 edition is the 155th, at the Old Course at St Andrews, where the course runs out along the shoreline and back into the town.

Why it matters

The Open is golf in its original form: links land, wind, firm turf, deep pot bunkers and weather that changes the tournament from morning to afternoon. The draw is deliberately opened to qualifiers from around the world through final qualifying, and the Claret Jug is the sport's oldest trophy still competed for. A win at St Andrews is treated as the closest thing golf has to a home championship.

History

The first Open was played in 1860 at Prestwick, organised by the Prestwick club for professional golfers and won by Willie Park Sr. Old Tom Morris won it four times, Harry Vardon six, and the championship has been held every year since 1860 except the two world wars and 2020. The Open has been played at St Andrews more than any other course, and 2027 returns there for the 155th edition.

What we could not verify

  • The public ballot page’s outcome deadline has passed; current general-admission availability and any surplus sale were not confirmed.
  • The detailed 2027 accessibility guide is due in early 2027; accessible parking requires advance registration by 2 July 2027 under the current organizer page.
  • Security checks apply, while the detailed prohibited-items list is to be published separately. Under-16s need a valid ticket and an adult over 18.
