How to plan for Burning Man

Black Rock City is a temporary city built by its participants on a dry lakebed in Nevada, and the 2027 event window is published as 29 August–6 September. Ticket-sale dates for 2027 had not been announced at review, so the plan starts with the survival guide rather than a flight search.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 29 August–6 September 2027 · ticket-sale dates not yet announced

Venue or host area: Black Rock City, on the Black Rock Desert playa north of Reno, Nevada. The city is laid out fresh each year around a central axis; the map marker here shows the region, not the entry road or the gate.

Access: Entry is by ticket, and the organiser's current guidance indicates ordinary vehicles also need a separate vehicle pass. The official 2027 sale calendar had not been published at review, and unofficial resale listings were not treated as evidence that a ticket will be honoured.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The organiser publishes arrival, gate and traffic instructions for each edition, and they change; navigating to the approximate marker on our map instead of following them is how people end up stranded on unmarked desert tracks. If you are driving, check whether a separate vehicle pass is required, and plan fuel, water, food, shade and waste removal before you buy supplies. Entry staff can turn away people who cannot meet basic survival needs.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A temporary city built and dismantled each year by its participants on the Black Rock Desert playa in Nevada, running for about nine days around Labor Day. Black Rock City is laid out on a grid with a semicircular street plan, housing tens of thousands of people in theme camps, with art installations on the open playa and a large wooden figure — the Man — at the centre. Nothing is sold inside except ice and coffee; food, water, shelter and power are all brought in.

Why it matters

Burning Man is the reference point for participatory culture events, and its ten principles — radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy — are quoted by festivals worldwide. The desert setting is part of the test: heat, dust storms, alkaline dust and no infrastructure for miles, with the event's own survival guidance treated as a condition of entry.

History

It began in 1986 as a bonfire on Baker Beach in San Francisco, moved to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, and the first planned Black Rock City street grid followed in the 1990s. The ten principles were written down in 2004, the event has sold out through a lottery for most years since 2011, and the 2020 and 2021 editions were replaced by virtual events. Rain turned the playa to mud and stranded vehicles in 2023, closing the exit road for a day.
