How to plan for AfrikaBurn

AfrikaBurn is a participant-built town in the Tankwa Karoo, and the 2027 window is published as 26 April–2 May. The approach road is gravel and the site is genuinely remote, so transport and self-sufficiency matter as much as the ticket.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 26 April–2 May 2027 · Quaggafontein, Tankwa Karoo

Venue or host area: Quaggafontein in the Tankwa Karoo, a semi-desert region of the Northern Cape reachable by long gravel roads. The map marker shows the region only; the organiser's directions are the only reliable route.

Access: Entry is by ticket sold through the organiser, with camp, theme-camp and participation arrangements handled separately. No 2027 price, sale schedule or remaining inventory was verified, and no other burn's ticket or vehicle rules apply here.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Use the organiser's published directions rather than a pin or a saved GPS trace, and allow daylight for the gravel sections. The event's own road guidance says plainly that people have died on the approach, which is a reason to keep speeds down and the vehicle in condition rather than to set a tight arrival time. Supplies, water and waste removal are your responsibility, and the nearest town is not a substitute for a camp plan.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A participant-built gathering in the Tankwa Karoo, a semi-desert region of South Africa, held for about a week in late April or early May. The site at Quaggafontein is laid out as a temporary town of theme camps around a central artworks area, everything is brought in and taken out, and the large artworks are burned at the end of the week.

Why it matters

AfrikaBurn is the largest regional Burning Man event outside the United States and the one with the most extreme setting: a vast, dry, sparsely populated landscape where water, power and shelter are entirely self-provided, and the nearest town is an hour's drive away. It has also become a significant platform for Southern African artists, with large-scale works commissioned and burned each year.

History

The first AfrikaBurn was held in 2007 on a farm in the Tankwa Karoo, growing out of South African participants' trips to Nevada and organised under Burning Man's regional event framework. It has run annually since — apart from the pandemic years — and moved to the larger Quaggafontein site as attendance grew.
