How to plan for Tour of Flanders — Men Elite

The 2027 Men Elite race is scheduled for 4 April. The organizer confirms a start in Bruges and a passage through Maldegem, but the 2027 notice reviewed does not provide the complete course or a spectator-access plan.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 4 April 2027 · Men Elite; Bruges start and Maldegem passage confirmed

Venue or host area: The 2027 Men Elite race starts in Bruges and passes through Maldegem. The full route and finish details are not specified in the 2027 announcement reviewed; the overview map marks Bruges as the confirmed start, not the full course.

Access: The 2027 organizer announcement says visitors can welcome the Men Elite race as it passes through Maldegem’s Markt. That does not establish access, parking, barriers or road closures at other points; check the current event and municipality notices. We Ride Flanders is a separate participant ride, not a spectator ticket.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Choose a confirmed viewing town only after checking its current fan guide and local notices. The organizer’s 2027 announcement confirms the Bruges start and Maldegem passage, but not the full course, finish, parking or closure schedule. We Ride Flanders is a separately registered sportive on 3 April 2027, not admission to the Men Elite race.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

Getting to Bruges

A medieval Flemish city of canals and market squares, with the wider Flanders countryside of cobbles and bergs beyond the ring road.

The venue

The 2027 Men Elite race starts in Bruges and passes through Maldegem. The full route and finish details are not specified in the 2027 announcement reviewed; the overview map marks Bruges as the confirmed start, not the full course.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A one-day cobbled Classic in Flanders, run at the end of March or start of April over roughly 270 km of farm roads, short steep climbs and cobbled lanes. The 2027 Men Elite race starts in Bruges on 4 April, passes through Maldegem and finishes in Oudenaarde after a sequence that includes the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg.

Why it matters

The Ronde is a national event in Belgium: the whole country stops for it, and the Muur van Geraardsbergen and Oude Kwaremont are treated as monuments in their own right. It is the first of the cobbled Classics and the one Flemish riders are judged on above all others — a Belgian winner here matters more locally than a Tour stage, and the roadside crowd is measured in the hundreds of thousands across the day.

History

The Tour of Flanders was first run in 1913, conceived by a cycling journalist as a way to showcase Flemish roads, and has been held every year since except those lost to the First World War. The finish moved several times before settling in Oudenaarde in 2012, and the route has been reshaped repeatedly as cobbled sectors were lost to road improvements and then restored. A women's edition has run since 2004.
