How to plan for Venice Carnival 2027

The organizer lists Venice Carnival from 23 January to 9 February 2027. Its Street Show call gives selected performance dates, but the full programme still carried 2026 material on 30 October; the public-space schedule is therefore not complete. The separate Official Dinner Show is a ticketed event, not a pass for Carnival across the city.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 23 January–9 February 2027 · selected Street Show dates published; full programme pending

Venue or host area: The Street Show is planned for public spaces in Venice, with the specific squares and performance times still in selection. The organizer’s 2027 Official Dinner Show is a separate 18+ event at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi.

Access: The organizer identifies performances in public spaces but does not state a general admission or ballot rule on the Street Show page. The Official Dinner Show is a separate 18+ ticketed product; a ticket for it does not establish access to the citywide Carnival or any remaining inventory.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The organizer’s arrival guidance describes walking and waterbus travel in the historic centre, but no 2027 Carnival pedestrian or ACTV service order was found. The City Council says public-transport landing stages are accessible at ordinary tides and that high or low water can steepen ramps; this is general mobility guidance, not an event route guarantee. The City’s 2027 Access Fee calendar lists dates beginning 26 March, after Carnival, but that fee is separate from event admission and operating details were still pending. Recheck tide, mobility, crowd-control and transport notices before travel.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A carnival in Venice running from late January into February, with masked and costumed revellers in the streets and squares, a programme of ticketed balls in palazzi, theatre and music performances, and a Street Show of selected acts in the city's campi. The costume tradition is specific: the bauta, the colombina and the plague-doctor mask are the three forms most people recognise, and putting on a mask in the street is what the event is for.

Why it matters

Venice's carnival is the masquerade carnival, and it is as much a social event as a spectacle: the private balls — some in palazzi closed to the public for the rest of the year — are sold months ahead, and the street programme fills the squares with performers. It is also the reason Venice has a winter tourist season at all, with the city's hotels full in a month that would otherwise be quiet.

History

Carnival in Venice dates from the medieval republic, when it ran for weeks and the mask allowed citizens to move between social classes anonymously. It was suppressed for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, with masks banned under Austrian rule, and the city revived it in 1979 as a cultural festival with a different theme each year. The modern event now runs about two and a half weeks.

What we could not verify

  • The full programme page still showed 2026 content; 2027 Street Show squares, event-by-date times and final artist selection were not complete.
  • No 2027 Carnival-specific step-free route, pedestrian-flow order or waterbus service plan was found. ACTV’s accessibility page returned a WAF block in the browser; the City Council response is the accessible alternate source.
  • Vivaticket availability labels are dynamic and apply only to the separate Dinner Show; they do not establish citywide access or remaining Carnival inventory.

  6. Comune di Venezia — 2027 Access Fee calendar; fee dates begin after Carnival
  7. Vivaticket — separate Dinner Show date selector; availability is dynamic
