Riotur says the street-bloco season begins 16 January, but 2027 blocos are still in the permit process and their routes are not yet a citywide operating plan.

Venue or host area: The Sambadrome dates cover two separately organised parade series at Marquês de Sapucaí. Street blocos take place across the city; Riotur’s 2027 registration notice describes a review process, not a final route list, closure plan or venue map.
Access: LIESA announced a 10 September 2026 main Sambadrome sale through Ticketmaster; Série Ouro has a separate seller. The city’s street-bloco registration process is still under review. Direct seller pages returned anti-bot blocks at research time, so no remaining inventory, sold-out claim or citywide street-admission rule is inferred here.

Plan around the official access route
LIESA announced Sambadrome ticket sales through Ticketmaster, while Liga RJ has a separate Série Ouro sale. Ticket seller pages were blocked by anti-bot protection during the 30 October review, so this guide does not label any current seat as available or sold out. Riotur’s 2027 permit notice does not establish one admission rule for every street bloco. Its 2026 city operations notice is historical context only; check current COR.Rio, transit and municipal notices when 2027 route plans are published.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview
What this event is
Rio's carnival: a week of street parties and blocos across the city, plus the competitive samba-school parades in the Sambadrome, a purpose-built stadium with a parade strip flanked by grandstands. The top-tier schools — Grupo Especial — parade over two nights, each with hundreds of drummers, thousands of costumed dancers and floats the size of buildings, and are judged on ten criteria read out publicly.
Rio Carnival is the largest carnival in the world and the one that turned samba into a competitive art form: the schools are community institutions with year-round rehearsal spaces, and the parade is judged like a sport, with marks announced and disputed. The street blocos are the other half of the event — hundreds of free parties, from huge organised processions to neighbourhood bands that form in a square and walk.
History
Rio's carnival has been documented since the early 18th century, and the samba-school parade took its competitive form in the 1930s, when the first schools were founded in the city's hillside communities. The Sambadrome, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, opened in 1984 and gave the parade a permanent, purpose-built stage. The Champions' Parade the following Saturday is the victory lap for the top schools.
