How to plan for Venice Film Festival

La Biennale has confirmed the 84th Venice International Film Festival for September 2027 on the Lido, without publishing exact days on its own site. Secondary listings disagree on the closing date, so the month is the only safe planning anchor.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: September 2027 · exact dates not published by La Biennale at review

Venue or host area: The Lido di Venezia, primarily the Palazzo del Cinema and the PalaBiennale, with screenings and industry spaces along the Lungomare Marconi.

Access: Public tickets are sold for most screenings, generally in advance and online, with accreditation for press and industry through La Biennale. The 2027 month is confirmed but the exact days and ticket terms are not published on the Biennale site.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

You reach the Lido by vaporetto from Venice itself, which turns a twenty-minute crossing into the main logistical decision of the week: staying on the Lido puts you beside the venues, while staying in Venice means a boat each way. September weather is usually warm but the lagoon can turn windy. Public tickets for most screenings are sold in advance online; accreditation runs separately.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

The film festival of the Venice Biennale, held on the Lido in late August and early September, with a competition for the Golden Lion, an out-of-competition programme, Venice Horizons for new filmmakers and Venice Immersive for VR work. Screenings take place in the Palazzo del Cinema and the surrounding venues on the island, a short vaporetto ride from the city.

Why it matters

Venice is the oldest film festival in the world and the one that has become the launch pad for the awards season: films that premiere on the Lido in early September frequently go on to the Oscars, and the festival's willingness to programme streaming releases alongside cinema has made it the most relevant of the autumn festivals. Its Lido setting and long history give it a weight the newer festivals do not have.

History

The first Venice Film Festival was held in 1932 on the terrace of a Lido hotel, making it the oldest in the world. It became a Biennale programme in 1935, the Golden Lion was introduced in 1949, and the festival was suspended during the war and again in 1969–79 amid political protests. It has run annually since 1980, and 2027 is the 84th edition.
