How to plan for Berlinale

The 77th Berlin International Film Festival runs 10–21 February 2027, opening on a Wednesday for the first time. Public screenings are ticketed, and the festival has announced audience days but not its 2027 ticket prices.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 10–21 February 2027 · 77th edition

Venue or host area: Screenings run across cinemas around Potsdamer Platz — the Berlinale Palast for premieres, plus the Zoo Palast, CinemaxX, Cubix and Haus der Kulturen der Welt — with the European Film Market based at the Gropius Bau.

Access: Most public screenings are ticketed, sold per film rather than as a festival pass, with industry accreditation handled separately through the European Film Market. The festival has announced its 2027 audience days for 20–21 February but not its ticket prices or on-sale dates.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Berlin's transport makes the festival unusually easy to navigate: Potsdamer Platz is on the U2 and S-Bahn, and most venues sit within a few stops. Public tickets go on sale per screening, online and at the box offices, and sell out quickly for gala screenings. February weather is cold and grey, so queueing outside is its own planning problem.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

03 · Location

Getting to Berlin

Germany's capital is a low-rise city of former halves, with Potsdamer Platz sitting on the old boundary and U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines crossing everywhere.

Connections, terminals and transfer arrangements change — confirm them with the airline and the organiser rather than planning around a fixed transfer time.

04 · Overview

What this event is

Berlin's international film festival, held over twelve days in February, with a competition for the Golden Bear, the Panorama, Forum, Generation and Berlinale Special sections, and a large public ticket allocation. Screenings are spread across cinemas around Potsdamer Platz and the Kulturforum, and the festival sells hundreds of thousands of tickets to the public.

Why it matters

The Berlinale is the most political of the major festivals and the most public: it sells tickets to Berliners in numbers no other A-list festival matches, so the red carpet and the queue for a morning screening share the same venues. Its sidebars are where much of its reputation is made — Panorama for queer and independent cinema, Forum for experimental work, Generation for films made with and for young audiences.

History

The first Berlinale was held in 1951, in a divided city, as a showcase for free cinema with the backing of the American occupation authorities. It moved to a February slot in 1978, added the Panorama and Forum sections in the 1980s, and moved its centre to Potsdamer Platz in 2000. The 2027 edition is the 77th and opens on a Wednesday for the first time.
