How to plan for Toronto International Film Festival

TIFF reports September 2027 dates in its own 2026 awards release, but its site did not carry a confirmed 2027 schedule at review. Treat the month as firm and the exact days as pending confirmation.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: September 2027 · exact dates not confirmed on tiff.net at review

Venue or host area: TIFF Lightbox on King Street West, with screenings across cinemas in the Entertainment District and the TIFF Bell Lightbox complex as the festival hub.

Access: Access is by individual ticket or by pass, with industry accreditation handled separately by TIFF. The 2027 sale schedule, prices and pass tiers were not published at review, so no availability is claimed.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

The venues cluster within walking distance of King and John, served by the 504 streetcar and St Andrew station. Toronto's street festival element means several blocks close to traffic, which is pleasant on foot and slow by car. Public tickets and passes go on sale in stages, with single tickets typically released closer to the festival; 2027 sale dates were not published at review.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

Connections, terminals and transfer arrangements change — confirm them with the airline and the organiser rather than planning around a fixed transfer time.

04 · Overview

What this event is

A ten-day film festival in Toronto in September, with hundreds of features and shorts across venues in the downtown core — the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales and others. It has no jury for its main award: the People's Choice Award is decided by audience ballot, and most screenings are open to anyone who buys a ticket.

Why it matters

TIFF is the festival that made the audience award matter: the People's Choice Award has predicted the Academy Award for Best Picture often enough that studios now treat a Toronto premiere as a launch. It is also unusually open for a festival of its size — there is no accreditation wall around most of the programme, and the city's filmgoing public is part of the event rather than a backdrop to it.

History

TIFF began in 1976 as the Festival of Festivals, a collection of the year's best films from other festivals, and added its own premieres through the 1980s. It moved to its current September slot and grew into one of the largest public film festivals in the world, opening the TIFF Bell Lightbox as its year-round home in 2010.
