01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: 21–31 January 2027 · Boulder, Colorado

Venue or host area: Boulder, Colorado: venues announced by the Institute include Macky Auditorium, Old Main, the Roe Green Theatre, Muenzinger Auditorium and Boulder High School, with events around Pearl Street.

Access: Passes and packages are the primary route and were on sale at review; single-film tickets were scheduled to start on 8 January 2027. The ticket announcement did not give price amounts, and no availability is claimed here.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Boulder is about an hour by bus or car from Denver International Airport, and the festival footprint is compact enough to walk or cycle between most venues. January in Boulder means snow and ice underfoot, so footwear matters. Passes and packages were on sale at review, with single-film tickets released from 8 January 2027.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

04 · Overview

What this event is

An independent film festival held over eleven days in January, showing features, documentaries and short films in competition and premiere sections. It has been held in Park City, Utah, for four decades — with screenings in Salt Lake City and at the Sundance resort — and the 2027 edition moves to Boulder, Colorado, the first change of host city in its history.

Why it matters

Sundance is the festival that defines independent cinema in the United States: a debut here can turn into a distribution deal, and its documentary competition has launched much of the non-fiction boom of the past two decades. The altitude, the snow and the shuttle buses between venues are part of its reputation, and the festival's labs and institute support filmmakers year-round.

History

The festival began in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, founded to attract filmmaking to Utah; Robert Redford's Sundance Institute took over its management in 1981 and the name changed in 1991. It grew into the main market for American independent film through the 1990s, and the 2027 edition in Boulder is the first outside Utah.
