How to plan for Milan Design Week

Milan Design Week 2027 is two programmes: Fuorisalone across the city from 12–18 April, and Salone del Mobile.Milano at Fiera Milano Rho from 13–18 April. There is no combined ticket — Fuorisalone has no central organiser, and Salone sells its own.

01 · Event details

Edition and venue

Timing: Fuorisalone 12–18 April 2027 · Salone del Mobile 13–18 April

Venue or host area: Two footprints: the Salone del Mobile at Fiera Milano Rho, and Fuorisalone spread across city districts — Brera, Tortona, Isola, 5Vie and Porta Venezia among them.

Access: There is no combined ticket. Salone del Mobile sells its own entry, with professionals admitted across the full run, students from 16 April and the general public on 17–18 April, at prices that vary by category and purchase time. Fuorisalone has no central organiser and no week-wide ticket: access is set showroom by showroom, and many installations are free.

02 · Plan the visit

Plan around the official access route

Fiera Milano Rho is on metro line M1, roughly twenty-five minutes from the centre; Fuorisalone is best done on foot within a district and by metro between them. The two programmes overlap for most of the week, and trying to cover both in one day does not work. April weather is mild and showery, and the city's hotels fill months ahead.

  • Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
  • Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
  • Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
  • Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

03 · Location

Getting to Milan

Lombardy's capital has a dense historic centre inside a ring road, with the trade-fair complex at Rho on the city's north-western edge.

Connections, terminals and transfer arrangements change — confirm them with the airline and the organiser rather than planning around a fixed transfer time.

04 · Overview

What this event is

Two overlapping programmes in April: the Salone del Mobile furniture fair at the Rho Fiera exhibition centre, and Fuorisalone, a citywide programme of showrooms, installations, exhibitions and parties in Milan's design districts — Brera, Tortona, Isola, the 5VIE area and around the Duomo.

Why it matters

Milan Design Week is the world's furniture and design fair and the point in the year when the industry sets its direction: manufacturers launch collections, studios stage installations, and the city's courtyards and palazzi become venues for a week. Fuorisalone is the reason it matters beyond trade — most of it is free and open to anyone willing to walk between districts.

History

The Salone del Mobile was founded in 1961 as a national furniture fair and moved to the Rho Fiera exhibition centre in 2006. Fuorisalone grew alongside it from the 1980s, when brands and designers began staging their own events across the city rather than waiting for a stand at the fair, and the two now run in the same week each April.

What we could not verify

  • Salone's 2027 ticket prices and early-bird schedule were advertised but not posted in full; the student page said 2027 rates were not yet available.
  • The Fuorisalone 2027 district programme and individual installation access were not published.
  • Accessible routes at Fiera Milano Rho and in the historic districts were not verified for 2027.
