Plan around the official access route
The 2027 ballot opened September 29 and closed October 19, 2026; successful applicants' cards are scheduled to be charged November 3. The official international-entry page says selected travel packages include guaranteed entry, but this does not apply to every package. Confirm the exact package and entry terms before paying. The course map and GPX currently offered on the event page are labelled 2026, so wait for the 2027 route file before making course-specific plans.
Confirm the edition: use the organiser’s latest date and venue announcement, not only a customary month.
Confirm admission: check whether access is by purchase, ballot, qualification, application or free/public entry; do not assume a ticket includes every venue or session.
Confirm local logistics: check current transport, accessibility, road closures and arrival instructions with the organiser and relevant local authority.
Protect flexibility: compare cancellation terms before booking travel around a date or route that is not fully confirmed.

Getting to Sydney
New South Wales' capital wraps around a drowned river valley, so the harbour shapes both the geography and most journeys across the city.
Connections, terminals and transfer arrangements change — confirm them with the airline and the organiser rather than planning around a fixed transfer time.
The venue

The catalogue marker shows Sydney, Australia at city or region level only — it is not an entrance, a gate, a course or a transfer route. For the event’s position among its category peers, open the Marathon overview and map.
04 · Overview
What this event is
A marathon from Miller Street in North Sydney, across the Harbour Bridge and through the city's eastern suburbs, finishing beside the Sydney Opera House. The course runs past the Opera House and under the bridge within the first few kilometres, and the field is around 40,000 across the marathon and its companion events — the largest running festival in the southern hemisphere.
Why it matters
Sydney gives the majors a southern-hemisphere race and a course that is almost entirely harbour landscape: the bridge crossing and the Opera House finish are the two images the event is built on. Becoming a major in 2025 moved it from a well-regarded city race to a global destination marathon with a ballot that now draws applicants from Europe and North America. It is also the major that fits a European winter training block, running in late August.
History
The Sydney Marathon was first run in 2001, when the Sydney Running Festival was created as a multi-distance event around the harbour, and it grew into Australia's biggest marathon. The event spent years as a candidate for the Abbott World Marathon Majors before being admitted as the seventh major, with Cape Town announced as the eighth for 2027. The Opera House finish and the North Sydney start are the modern course's signature, and the ballot now draws applicants from Europe and North America rather than mostly from Australia.
